Apple CarPlay vs Android Auto: Which Car Stereo System Is Right for You?

Apple CarPlay vs Android Auto — An Honest Comparison

Walk into any car audio shop today and two logos dominate the box art: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both promise the same basic idea — project your phone's apps onto your car stereo's touchscreen for safer, easier access while driving. But despite the surface similarities, the two platforms have meaningful differences in how they look, what they do, and which phones they support. If you are about to buy a new head unit, understanding these differences will save you money and frustration.

The Basics: What Each System Actually Does

Apple CarPlay works exclusively with iPhones (iPhone 5 and newer running iOS 7.1+). When you connect your iPhone to a CarPlay-compatible stereo — either via a Lightning/USB-C cable or wirelessly — a simplified version of your phone's interface appears on the car's screen. You get Apple Maps (or Google Maps / Waze), Apple Music, phone calls, iMessage, and a curated selection of third-party apps like Spotify, WhatsApp, and Audible.

Android Auto works with Android phones running Android 8.0 or later. The concept is identical: connect your phone, and a driving-optimised interface appears on the head unit. You get Google Maps (or Waze), Google Assistant, phone calls, Google Messages, and third-party apps like Spotify, WhatsApp, and Pocket Casts.

    Interface and Design

CarPlay mirrors the clean, grid-based look you already know from your iPhone. App icons sit in a familiar layout, and Siri handles voice commands. The interface feels polished and consistent, though Apple gives you limited ability to customise the layout.

Android Auto, on the other hand, uses a card-based interface with Google Assistant at its centre. Recent updates introduced a split-screen mode that shows navigation and media controls simultaneously — something CarPlay only added with iOS 16. Android Auto also offers a wider selection of compatible apps because Google's approval process for developers is less restrictive than Apple's.

    Navigation

This is arguably the most important feature for daily drivers. CarPlay defaults to Apple Maps, which has improved dramatically in recent years with detailed lane guidance, speed camera alerts, and cycling directions. You can also install Google Maps or Waze and use them through CarPlay.

Android Auto defaults to Google Maps — widely considered the gold standard for navigation accuracy, traffic prediction, and point-of-interest data. Waze is also fully supported. For sheer navigation quality, Google Maps on Android Auto has a slight edge, though the gap has narrowed considerably.

    Voice Assistants

CarPlay uses Siri, which handles music playback, messaging, and basic queries well but can struggle with complex requests. Android Auto uses Google Assistant, which is generally regarded as more capable — especially for answering questions, controlling smart home devices, and understanding natural language. For hands-free driving, Google Assistant feels more responsive and accurate.

    Wired vs Wireless

Both systems support wired (USB cable) and wireless connections, but wireless capability depends heavily on the head unit. Budget stereos typically only support wired connections. Mid-range and premium units from Pioneer, Kenwood, and Sony increasingly offer wireless for both platforms.

Wireless convenience is brilliant — you get in the car and everything connects automatically without fumbling for a cable. The trade-off is slightly higher battery drain on your phone since it uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth simultaneously. If your commute is short, wireless is ideal. For long road trips, keeping a cable handy to charge while connected makes more sense.

    App Availability

Android Auto supports a broader range of third-party apps, including more messaging platforms, podcast players, and EV charging finders. CarPlay's library is more curated but covers all the essentials. Both platforms support Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, Audible, and WhatsApp — the apps most drivers actually use.

    Which Should You Choose?

The honest answer: it depends entirely on which phone you use. If you are an iPhone user, CarPlay is seamless and reliable. If you are on Android, Android Auto integrates perfectly with Google's ecosystem. Switching platforms just for your car stereo makes no sense.

The good news is that the vast majority of modern head units support both CarPlay and Android Auto. This means you are not locked into one ecosystem, and passengers with different phones can connect too. When browsing our stereo range, look for units that explicitly list both — nearly every model above £120 does.

What About Families With Mixed Phones?

If one partner uses an iPhone and the other uses a Samsung, dual-support stereos solve the problem completely. Whichever phone connects first takes over the display. Some premium units even support two simultaneous Bluetooth connections, so the passenger can control music while the driver uses navigation.

    Our Advice

Don't overthink it. Buy a stereo that supports both platforms, prioritise wireless connectivity if your budget allows, and focus the rest of your money on sound quality. The interface differences between CarPlay and Android Auto are minor compared to the impact of a good amplifier and properly installed speakers.

Visit our Bradford or Leeds store to try both systems on our demo units — the best way to decide is to tap through each one yourself.
