How to Add Apple CarPlay to Any Car

Adding Apple CarPlay to Older Cars: Every Option Explained

Apple CarPlay has quickly become one of the most sought-after features in modern vehicles. The ability to mirror your iPhone's navigation, music, messaging, and podcast apps onto your car's touchscreen makes driving safer and infinitely more enjoyable. But what if your car did not come with CarPlay from the factory? The good news is that there are multiple ways to add it — regardless of your vehicle's age or make.

Option 1: Aftermarket Head Unit with Built-In CarPlay

The most common and reliable way to add CarPlay is to replace your factory stereo with an aftermarket head unit that includes CarPlay support. Brands like Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, and Alpine all offer double DIN and floating-screen units with both wired and wireless CarPlay built in.

This approach gives you the best experience because you get a full-size touchscreen (typically 6.8 to 9 inches), high-quality audio processing, and additional features like DAB+ digital radio, Bluetooth 5.0, and Android Auto for passengers with non-Apple phones. Prices range from around £150 for a wired-only CarPlay unit to £500+ for a premium wireless floating display.

The downside is that replacing the head unit requires a fascia adapter (to fill any gaps in the dashboard), a wiring harness (to connect the new stereo to your car's factory wiring), and potentially a steering wheel control interface if you want to keep your steering wheel audio buttons. At Sync Sonic, we stock all the necessary adapters and include them in our installation pricing.

Option 2: Retrofit CarPlay Module (Keep Your Factory Screen)

If you love your car's original dashboard design and do not want to change the head unit, a retrofit CarPlay module may be the answer. These compact boxes plug into your factory stereo's existing connections and add CarPlay functionality to the screen you already have. They are particularly popular for premium vehicles like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Land Rover, where replacing the factory unit would mean losing climate controls, parking sensors, or other integrated features.

Retrofit modules work by intercepting the video signal going to your factory screen and overlaying the CarPlay interface when you activate it. Most support both wired and wireless connections. Installation is cleaner than a full head unit swap because nothing visible changes — your dashboard looks completely stock.

We stock a wide range of retrofit CarPlay modules for popular UK vehicles, with prices starting from around £150. Installation typically takes 1-2 hours depending on the vehicle.

    Option 3: Portable CarPlay Screens

A newer option that has gained popularity is a portable CarPlay display. These are standalone touchscreens (usually 7 to 10 inches) that mount on your dashboard or windscreen using a suction cup or adhesive mount. They connect to your iPhone wirelessly and provide full CarPlay functionality without any permanent modification to your car.

Portable screens are ideal for drivers who lease their vehicle, share a car, or simply want the easiest possible installation. The trade-off is aesthetics — a screen stuck to your dashboard does not look as clean as an integrated solution — and audio output, which typically routes through your car's AUX input or FM transmitter rather than directly through the stereo's amplifier.

Option 4: CarPlay Dongle for Factory Android-Based Screens

Many modern cars come with factory stereos that run Android-based operating systems but lack official CarPlay support. In these cases, a CarPlay dongle that plugs into the USB port can add wireless CarPlay to the existing screen. These are small, affordable (£30-£80), and require zero installation. However, they only work on vehicles with compatible factory Android systems, so check compatibility before purchasing.

Wired vs Wireless CarPlay: Which Should You Choose?

Wired CarPlay requires a Lightning or USB-C cable connection each time you get in the car. It is the most stable and reliable option with zero latency, and it charges your phone simultaneously. Wired CarPlay is supported on virtually every compatible head unit and retrofit module.

Wireless CarPlay connects via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so you can leave your phone in your pocket or bag. It is supremely convenient — you get in, start the engine, and CarPlay appears automatically within a few seconds. The trade-off is slightly higher battery drain on your phone (since it uses Wi-Fi continuously) and occasional connection hiccups on cheaper units. For short commutes, wireless is ideal. For long road trips, keep a cable handy to charge.

    What About Android Auto?

If any member of your household uses an Android phone, make sure whatever solution you choose also supports Android Auto. The vast majority of aftermarket head units support both platforms, as do most retrofit modules. This ensures anyone can connect, regardless of their phone brand.

    Installation Considerations

While portable screens and dongles are plug-and-play, aftermarket head units and retrofit modules benefit enormously from professional installation. A skilled installer ensures:

    • Clean cable routing with no visible wires
    • Proper integration with steering wheel controls
    • Retention of factory features like parking cameras and climate display
    • Correct audio signal routing for the best sound quality
